Brutalism in web design: Some questions from an observer


I read this article on brutalist designs for mobile applications.  To be honest, I found the comments to be as interesting as the article itself.  It has raised some questions for me.

Can brutalism enhance creativity?

Eschewing rules for UX best practices

Is 'brutal web design' valid given that brutalism in architecture aimed to expose what something was constructed from, when 'brutal web designs' can't show their html source?


Is it right to create something ugly (brutal) when you could create something beautiful?


If you have to fly in an aeroplane for 8 hours day, would you rather fly Easyjet or first class on Cathay Pacific?

Architecture differs from construction and building in that good architecture aspires to elevate the soul and serve society.

Can brutal web design serve the same lofty goal? To delight and serve the users?
Be Tron and fight for your users.


Personally, I am quite a fan of minimalism.  When it comes to web applications, I value:

  • ease of use
  • discoverability
  • clarity of action
  • performance
  • meaningful data analysis  

There is no conflict between these factors and an aesthetically pleasing, immersive experience.
